Frequently Asked Questions – About the Livery Industry

What is a livery service?

A livery business provides ride services using limousines, black cars, luxury sedans, vans and SUVs, party buses and other luxury vehicles. A livery service is a type of vehicle for hire with a driver; this differs from rental cars which are driven by the renter.

What’s the difference between livery and taxi?

Livery services are different from taxicab services, rideshare platforms (like Uber and Lyft), and public transportation used on an as-needed basis because limo rides are prearranged. Pick-up and drop-off locations and times are scheduled ahead of time. Livery companies are also required to carry commercial auto insurance and meet safety requirements set by the city and/or state.

What should I look for when buying a limo?

The first factor to consider when buying a limo for your fleet is the local demand. Whether that’s a limousine for weddings, an executive van for corporate transportation, an SUV or party bus, the next vehicle you purchase should fit a current need in your area. Price is always an important factor, but it’s not a simple one; be sure to consider the cost of new vs. used vehicles, insurance rates, maintenance expenses and fuel consumption. Other factors to take into account when buying a limo are seating capacity and storage and trunk space, and aesthetics – for example, a flashy vehicle can be great for promoting your business but poorly suited for all types of events and clients.

What’s the difference between a chauffeur and a driver?

A driver is essentially anyone who is operating a car or other vehicle. A chauffeur, on the other hand, is a licensed professional who is responsible for transporting customers and who is trained to look after their needs.

How can I start a limousine business?

In order to start a limousine business, you will need a business license and permit to operate. Then, any business owner or employee who will be driving customers must have a clean driving record, hold a valid driver’s licenses and chauffeur’s licenses. Diving any livery vehicles that weigh more than 26,000 pounds and/or is designed to transport more than 15 passengers will also require a commercial driver’s license (CDL). Before starting your limo business, you will also need to get business insurance and insure each of the vehicles in your fleet. The next step will be getting set up with a ride reservation system and integrated limousine call center and dispatch service.

How can I improve my limo business?

Customers want everything to be easy and it’s the job of the limo service to cater to their needs. The first way to improve a limo business is to ensure that customers can always contact your company to book rides and that the reservation process is simple. Livery software, 24-hour call center services, booking apps and payment processing are all ways to facilitate reservations for customers. Providing your repeat and VIP clients with a direct phone line can be another way to encourage customer loyalty.
Another factor is reliability; customers don’t recommend limo services that are unreliable. Fleet management software, batch schedule reports, driver dispatching, wake-up calls and ride reminders are industry-standard tools that help limo businesses of all sizes be punctual.

How do limo companies get clients?

Limo companies capture clients mainly through limo booking platforms, mobile app for reservations, as well as direct ride reservations via their website, email, and phone calls. Additionally, limo companies attract clients through affiliate referrals, farm-ins, recommendations, social media sites, marketing and advertising.

What can a limo company do to attract more clients?

Competition is steep for limo companies in most areas of the U.S. Smart fleet owners are spending more and more time managing social media campaigns, pay-per-click advertising, expanding affiliate network relationships, and curating marketing efforts targeting corporate customers. These are all channels for bringing in more clients.
